The Taipei City and New Taipei City governments have officially received confirmation from the International Masters Games Association (IMGA) that they have been awarded the hosting rights for the World Masters Games 2025. This exciting news marks another major international multi-sport event for Taiwan, following the 2009 Summer Deaflympics, the 2016 International Children’s Games, and the 2017 Summer Universiade in Taipei. The Sports Administration under the Ministry of Education has expressed its congratulations and pledged full support for the event. Since the initial assessment and application phases in 2019, the Sports Administration has strongly backed the bid and will continue to assist in organizing the Games following the successful model of the 2017 Universiade in Taipei.

The IMGA has organized the World Masters Games every four years since its first edition in 1985. The Games are open to participants aged 30 and above, with no restrictions on the number of events they can register for. On average, participants stay for around 15 days, and more than half bring family members or friends along, making it a unique international sports event that combines athletics with tourism.

Currently, the two city governments are planning to hold the event from May 17 to May 30, 2025, a period chosen for its favorable weather and to avoid both typhoon season and peak tourist periods. The Games will feature 32 sports and utilize 84 venues across Taipei, New Taipei, Hsinchu, Taoyuan, and Yilan. With over 30,000 expected participants and visitors, the event is anticipated to bring significant tourism and economic benefits to northern Taiwan.

The Sports Administration noted that both Taipei and New Taipei have extensive experience hosting major international sporting events. It is confident that the World Masters Games will once again showcase Taiwan’s strengths in sports, culture, and tourism, while also promoting a nationwide passion for physical fitness and active living.
